Pressure washer types

Electric pressure washers employ an electric motor or pump to increase the force of the water coming out of your garden hose. Thumbtack’s resident home expert David Steckel recommends electric pressure washers due to their lower price, portability, and ease of usage for non-experts.

On the other hand, gas pressure washers are machines typically used by pressure washing services and powered by gas. Compared to their electric counterparts, gas-powered pressure washers are bigger, noisier, heavier, and more expensive (often costing more than $300). They are more effective than electric machines and can be used anywhere, making them a great choice for cleaning decks, concrete, and siding, all of which tend to accumulate difficult stains and filth. However, Steckel cautioned that gas pressure cleaners could cause more damage than good by removing paint and other materials. If you’re not a power tools expert and just want to conduct some light house repair, he said, stay with an electric pressure washer.

Getting Ready for Pressure Washing

The effectiveness of various pressure washers varies. Before you start pressure cleaning, read the machine’s manual and ensure you have the right pressure washer. Master the techniques for preparing your equipment and deciding on the ideal spray pattern. Surface type and cleaning method (detergent, high-pressure, etc.) inform your settings.

Get the pressure washer ready, and then prepare the workspace. Remove any potential hazards to avoid tripping or getting your hoses tangled. Shut off and cover outdoor outlets and lighting using plastic tape to prevent accidental use. Cut back vegetation touching the outside of the house and water and cover all vegetation in the work area. Put the lid on it and lock the neighboring windows and doors.

How to Clean Windows Properly

Use some good old-fashioned soap, water, and a clean, lint-free cloth. A gentle cloth works best, but a sponge mop on a pole can reach upper windows. A standard garden hose will do the trick for rinsing. After that, dampen the mop with vinegar and water and wipe the glass clean; last, use a clean squeegee with a rubber blade, angling it down as you go from top to bottom to dry the window. Use a fresh cloth to wipe the glass.

Using a Pressure Washer Safely

If you want to use your pressure washer safely, read and follow the manual’s directions. Examples of such broad rules are:

  • Make sure you’re standing somewhere safe and secure where you won’t have to worry about losing your equilibrium.
  • Protect your eyes using the goggles recommended by the maker of your pressure washer.
  • When utilizing a gasoline-powered pressure washer, it’s important always to cover your ears.
  • Don’t use a pressure washer that runs on gasoline indoors or in a place that doesn’t have enough airflow. Turn the airflow away from any openings.
  • Always make sure you use a dry, elevated surface when connecting the power cord to your electric pressure washer. Don’t insert your damp fingers inside the plug.
  • Spray guns and pressure washers should never be left alone.
  • Always watch where you’re pointing the spray. Never aim the spray canister at any living thing, including humans. Avoid contact with power wires, outlets, and other electrical components while using the spray.

Cleaning With a Pressure Washer

Some standard housekeeping advice is provided below. When using a pressure washer, be careful to stick to the manufacturer’s guidelines. If you want to avoid ruining the exterior of your home, read the instructions to learn the proper spray settings and how far away the spray tip should be. Make sure the high-pressure setting won’t harm the outside surface by trying it out on a small, hidden area before you start cleaning.

You may need a detergent to remove the stubborn stains and filth from your home’s exterior:

  • It’s important only to use cleaning products made for high-pressure washing machines.
  • When applying cleaning products, use a gentle mist.
  • If you want to clean a vertical surface without leaving any streaks, start at the bottom and work your way up. Break up your work into manageable chunks that you can quickly recognize.
  • Don’t let the detergent dry before rinsing. If the surface dries off, wet it again.
  • You should turn off the detergent tap once you’re done using it. You can eliminate any leftover detergent by switching the pressure washer’s spray setting to the pattern most suited to your cleaning surface.
  • Just spray the soapy water and dirt away, working from the top down. Cut your work into manageable chunks.
